What is a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE)?
A thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) is a polymer that behaves like rubber at room temperature — soft, flexible, and elastic — but can be melted, molded, and re-melted like a thermoplastic. This dual nature is what makes TPE one of the fastest-growing material families in manufacturing.
Unlike thermoset rubber, which undergoes an irreversible chemical cure, TPE never permanently cross-links. Heat it, and it flows; cool it, and it returns to a rubber-like state. That means TPE parts can be produced by standard injection molding and extrusion, with cycle times measured in seconds, and scrap and runners can usually be recycled.
For product designers, TPE offers a practical middle ground: the soft-touch and sealing performance of rubber with the manufacturing economics of plastic.
How is TPE made?
Most commercial TPEs are produced by compounding — blending a rubbery phase with a thermoplastic phase in a twin-screw extruder. The result is a material with hard segments that give strength and processability, and soft segments that give flexibility and elasticity.
The most common TPE chemistries include:
- Styrenic block copolymers (TPS, often called TPR): SBS and SEBS based. Low cost, easy to process, widely used for soft-touch grips and shoe soles.
- Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU): Outstanding abrasion resistance and toughness.
- Thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPV): Dynamically vulcanized EPDM rubber in a polypropylene matrix. Excellent heat and oil resistance.
- Thermoplastic copolyester (TPEE/COPE): High strength, fatigue resistance, and broad temperature range.
Each family has its own property profile, which is why “TPE” is best understood as a category rather than a single material.

- Weather and UV resistance: SEBS-based grades perform well outdoors; polyurethane and TPV grades vary.
- Recyclability: TPE regrind can be reprocessed, unlike thermoset rubber.
- Colorability: TPE can be colored in a wide range, including translucent and skin-tone shades.

- Footwear: soles and midsoles in styrenic TPE.

- Application and end use (helps narrow the chemistry).
- Hardness in Shore A or Shore D.
- Service temperature range (continuous and peak).
- Processing method (injection molding, extrusion, blow molding).
- Exposure conditions (UV, chemicals, oils, outdoor weathering).
- Regulatory needs (food contact, RoHS, REACH, UL flammability).
- Color and surface finish (gloss, matte, soft-touch feel).
